“Just do it every day” and “only when you’re inspired” are both good advice — for different things. Daily is how you build a habit, an identity, a baseline skill; it works precisely because it stops asking how you feel. But some things — certain creative work, certain kinds of rest — wilt under obligation and run better on genuine willingness. Apply the wrong rule and you either burn out forcing something that needed space, or never start something that needed structure.
So the real question isn’t “which is better?” It’s “which kind is this particular practice?” Walk it down.
Step 1 — Is the goal to build a habit or identity, or is it something that genuinely benefits from rest and variation?

For anything you're trying to turn into a habit or an identity, daily wins — not because it's virtuous, but because it's easier. Motivation is unreliable; it shows up late and leaves early. Daily removes the single most expensive part of any practice: the daily decision about whether to do it. When it's just "what I do", you stop spending willpower negotiating with yourself. The key is to make the minimum tiny — a two-minute version still counts and still keeps the chain alive on bad days. You're not optimising the session; you're protecting the identity. Show up small, show up daily, and let the quality grow on top of a streak that no longer asks permission.
Some practices run on willingness, not obligation — and forcing them daily doesn't build them, it breaks them. Certain creative work needs the well to refill; certain rest is only restful when it isn't scheduled and audited. If this is one of those, trust that. Showing up when you genuinely feel the pull will produce something truer than grinding it out on empty ever would. This isn't a permission slip for avoidance — it works only because you do reliably return to it. But where forcing it would kill the joy or flatten the result, let it stay voluntary. Do the full version when you can, a minimal version when you're flat, and forgive the occasional miss without it meaning anything. The one rule worth keeping is: never two in a row. One missed day is life; two is the start of a new pattern. That single guardrail gives you most of daily's benefit while leaving room to be a person. Consistency without rigidity — that's the sustainable middle, and for many things it beats both extremes.
The mistake is treating “every day” or “when inspired” as a personality, when it’s really a property of the task. Sort the practice first — habit or restorative, reliable or avoidant, tiny-able or not — and the right rhythm picks itself. Then the question stops being a moral one and becomes a practical one you can actually answer.
