1. What do you actually need this routine to do for you?

So name it plainly. Do you wake anxious and need to feel steadier? Foggy and need to feel sharp? Rushed and need a few minutes that are yours before the day claims them? Design backward from that real goal. Everything else is a means to it, and anything that doesn't serve it can go.
2. What are your real constraints and chronotype?
There's a biological fact most routine advice ignores: people genuinely differ in when their bodies want to wake and perform. If you're a real morning lark, an early start is a gift. If you're a true night owl, dragging yourself up at 5am to journal is a fight you'll lose most weeks, and feel bad about losing.
Then there's the rest of your life. Children who wake when they wake. A commute that eats the first hour. A partner on a different schedule. A flat with no quiet corner. These aren't obstacles to design around later — they are the design brief. Build for the life you have, not the empty, sunlit kitchen in someone else's morning reel.
3. How much time do you honestly have?
Here's where most routines quietly die. You design for the perfect morning — the one where you wake before the alarm, nobody needs you, and a clear hour stretches ahead. That morning happens maybe twice a month. The other twenty-something mornings, the routine is already impossible by 7am, and you start the day having failed at something.
Be ruthlessly realistic. What does your average morning actually allow — and your worst one? If the honest answer is twelve minutes, design a brilliant twelve-minute routine. A small thing you do daily beats a grand thing you do occasionally and resent the rest of the time.
4. What's the one keystone thing?
The temptation is to stack: hydrate, then stretch, then meditate, then journal, then plan the day, then a walk. Ten habits chained together feel impressive on paper. In practice, miss one link and the whole chain tends to break, because each step depends on the last going to plan.
Instead, find the single anchor — the one thing that, done on its own, makes the morning feel like it counted. Often it's smaller than you'd expect: making the bed, ten minutes outside, writing three lines, a proper breakfast not eaten standing up. Protect that one thing fiercely. Let everything else be optional. A reliable anchor beats an ambitious stack every time.
5. What will survive a bad day?
This is the question that separates a routine you keep from one you abandon. Picture a genuinely hard morning: you slept badly, you're already late, the day ahead is heavy. Can you still do your routine? If the answer is no, it isn't really a routine — it's a fair-weather ritual that quietly hands you guilt on the days you most need a foothold.
So build in a minimum version. If the full thing is a walk, journalling and breakfast, the bad-day version might be one of those — or even just stepping outside for sixty seconds. The point isn't to do everything; it's to keep the thread unbroken so you never start the day already behind. A routine that bends doesn't break.
