1. Who exactly will I report to, and what are they like?

2. What will my actual days look like, beneath the pitch?

Every role is sold as its best self: the strategy, the impact, the interesting projects. But you won't spend your days inside the pitch — you'll spend them inside the meetings, the admin, the recurring tasks nobody mentions on the careers page.

Ask someone to walk you through a typical week. What takes up the most time? What's the part of the job people grumble about? The honest answer to that question tells you more than the job description ever will.

3. Where does this role actually lead?

A job isn't just what you do now; it's what it sets you up to do next. Some roles stretch you and open doors. Others pay well and quietly trap you in a skill set that won't travel.

Ask what the last few people in this role went on to do. Ask what you'd be learning that you couldn't learn elsewhere. If the honest answer is "not much," that doesn't make it a bad job — but it should be a conscious choice, not a surprise you discover two years in.

4. Why is this role open, and how have they treated me so far?

A vacancy has a story. Is it new growth, or did someone leave in frustration? Is this the third person they've hired for it in two years? You're allowed to ask, and the way they answer is itself a signal.

Look back over the whole process, too. Did they respect your time, communicate clearly, and keep their word? How a company behaves while it's trying to win you over is the best version of how it will behave once it has you.

5. What does this job cost my life, not just what does it pay?

Salary is the easiest number to compare and the most misleading one to decide on. A bigger figure can come with two extra hours of commuting, a phone that never stops, and a level of stress that follows you home.

Add it all up honestly: the hours, the travel, the flexibility, the toll on your evenings and weekends. Then ask whether the whole package — money, time, and peace of mind together — actually leaves you better off than where you are now.

6. Would I be quietly proud to do this work?

Set the spreadsheet aside for a moment. Picture telling someone you respect what you now do for a living. Is there a small lift of pride, a flicker of unease, or just a shrug?

Your gut isn't always right, but it's rarely random. If something feels off when everything looks good on paper, that feeling is data. It's worth understanding before you sign, not after.
